   Woy: It’s tempting to pick something fun — make myself 20 years old in San Francisco 1974 so I can catch what was billed as the Dead’s final run at Winterland, or something like that. But I’d go back to when I was in fourth grade, just a few months after my family had moved and I was in a new school. I had been playing with the one kid I knew a little bit in a creek that ran through our neighborhood, but it was early December and getting a little chilly, so we came back to my house for a while before he went home for dinner.

   I found out the next morning that his mother shot and killed him, one of his two sisters, his father and herself in the space of about two hours after he left my house. And if I could go back and do something, anything, to change what happened — even if it just meant asking Todd to stay for dinner — I would.

   Doug: I’d drink Zima if it meant winning another title.

   Doc: Your question reminds me of what happened with one of my grandmothers. Late in the summer of 1987, she set out to drive all over Ohio to see relatives she hadn’t visited in years. I talked with her on the phone a few days into the two-week trip, and she was having a ball. And I think just two days after she returned home, she died, peacefully, while asleep. I’ve always thought that was the perfect way for her to wrap up her life.
   If I knew I was going, I’d set out to see everyone I could and make sure they knew how important they’d been to me. I’d try not to make it a weepy thing, though — something like a two-week traveling wake.

   Guess what I did today? Okay, that one’s not fair (and not really exciting either, unless taking 2 kids to the doc, hospital for x-rays, pharmacy and medical supply store located in the Bronx (I kinda stood out, especially bc I have my wife’s care today – a white bimmer – oh, so masculine – sounds exciting) –

   Lots to choose from – politics, world inter-relations, beer, music – I’ll take the music route –

   In the same way that the Internet has helped foster a ‘give it all to me now’ type of expectation to news, ideas, anything – digital music has also, in my opinion, moved towards ‘I want it all now’ type of experience – I hear of people’s new iPods – that they’ve just traded a 30,000 track database (legality no questioned in this question) – but I still don’t see the benefit –

   I’ve never downloaded a single song – I don’t have any mp3 or apple variant music stored anywhere – I’ve got my CDs, buy a couple every once in awhile – and still seem to enjoy music – I’m not anywhere close to the same music lover / afficionardo as UC – I do not have a mental library of artists nor sessions that I can appreciate in the same way UC does – I’m not challenged by technology nor gagets – I just have not had any interest in moving this direction for my music (its a bit like a buffet vs. being served breakfast thing for me – sometimes, I don’t want to choose between everything, things I don’t even know that I like – I’d like my French Toast served with 2 pieces of links sausage, orange juice and coffee – and I don’t want to get up from my table)

   So my question is – ‘What am I missing out on?’

   uc – just read ur post – i spent some time with todd the day before – i was tight w kevin hugg then – lived behind the bowlin- sad – and i’m certain the 1 surviving has had a lot of issues – wow – deep – and that’s why we love ya uc

   Kewyson: The short answer is not much, besides a little convenience and a little savings. For me, the convenience part is a big deal, especially since the notion of a record store — or even a good record section, as the nearby Border’s used to have — is all but extinct. And while I can find nearly every title I would ever want on Amazon, if I hit up the iTunes store — or one of the other services I subscribe to — I can get it right now.

   However. Live music, via archive.org or etree.org? Need a computer for those, and there are literally thousands of shows — stuff you can’t find anywhere else — available for the cost of a couple of blank CDs. And those times you want That One Song, but you don’t need that crap in the middle of the album? iTunes is perfect.

   So — Some people can get along without ever downloading a single note and never miss a thing. I am not one of those people.

   Kevin Hugg was the other guy who was with us when we were playing in the creek the day Todd was killed. I think he went home before Todd and I came back to my house though.

   I will never forget the next day, when my parents told me what happened after seeing it in the Dispatch, or just meandering around the field at Windermere during lunch recess, wondering what I should do.

   Or should have done.
