Two things led me to get Taco Bell for lunch today:

  • A brief Twitter discussion yesterday about the joys of the Yum Brands hybrid restaurants — Kentucky Fried Pizza Bell! — got the ball rolling.
  • I was in the neighborhood of the Pizza Bell/Taco Hut in Center Township, Beaver County at lunchtime today.

Boom. Taco Bell is it. Because I’m cheap and easily swayed by advertising, I ordered a combo meal featuring the brand-new Beefy Crunch Burrito, which comes with two tacos and a drink. I get back to the office and start to eat; the burrito is indeed beefy and crunchy, so that’s a good start. Taco No. 1, however, seemed to be missing something, although I was most of the way through it before I noticed.

There was something amiss with taco No. 2 as well:

I know it’s a whole other fast food chain, but can I get a “Where’s the beef?” from the congregation?

Thank you and amen.

Seriously, Yum Brands people — I know I shouldn’t expect a half-pound of hamburger in a 99-cent taco, but this just doesn’t work. I mean, I have difficulties at your A&W/Long John Silver’s store across the river — I have to beg those people to give me napkins when I use their drive-through window, but at least they give me the food I pay for.

Thanks to my skimpy tacos, I’m probably going to need a snack this afternoon. Anyone have suggestions — preferably something besides a Fourth Meal at Taco Bell?

  1. First of all, it’s Kentacohut. ;)

Second, this reminds me of the time I hit up the Wendy’s on Baum Blvd before class a few years ago. I ordered two junior cheeseburgers. Thankfully I started eating them in the car on the way to Pitt because I noticed that there was no meat on either sandwich. Literally, just mustard, ketchup, lettuce, tomato, cheese and bun. At the risk of being late to class, I promptly turned around, went back and got two burgers with meat!

    1. Arrgh — Kentacohut was the one I was trying to remember! The Wendy’s in Beaver did something similar to me a couple years ago: they managed to serve me a large chili that had nothing in it but tomato broth. No beans, onions, meat — it might as well have been a warm can of V8.

  2. Mike – next time get their giant Box O’ Taco’s for $10 – then you can figured out, on average, the beef per taco ratio! :)
If it makes you feel better – my husband got cheeseburgers from McDees with NO BEEF AT ALL. Buns and toppings – no meat. And it happened to him twice! In 2 diffrent states!

Another wierd combo restaurant…. Long John Silvers/ A&W restaurant in Rochester. I guess in case you have a hankerin’ for fish and a root beer float at the same time, you know where to go. They must get a TON of pregnant ladies as customers!

  3. I assume, as a master of social media, you long ago heard the Combination Pizza Hut and Taco Bell song? If not, Google it up …

    1. One of the finest examples of masterful songwriting I’ve ever come across. Although I’d be more impressed if KFC, A&W and Long John Silver’s were included…

  4. I was excited about the A&W/Long John in Robinson until they started to not use the glass mugs for drinks and removed the sweet freeplay jukebox. Kills the A&W side of the experience. .

And my term is a Kentucky Fried Taco Hut…

  5. UC,
Stick with Yum Brands, and try KFC’s Double Down. Two boneless chicken breasts, two slices bacon, two slices cheese and “special sauce”. We are all concerned with your health, for the selfish reason that you entertain us, so I looked up some of the data on this beast. 32g of fat, 1380mg of sodium. One of these nails 50% of your recommended daily allowance of fat and sodium intake in one sitting. How efficient! I’ll bet you wouldn’t be lookin’ for a taco after eating this.
