horse’s patoot.

It’s not like I’m inexperienced in matters related to the Kentucky Derby — I’ve been there, for Christsake, while I was stationed at Fort Knox. But I’m an idiot when it comes to horseracing in general. The wife picked Afleet Alex, who made a good late run but couldn’t get closer than third place. I picked Sun King, who led the pack out of the gate but faded to 16th, or something equally dismal.

Uncle Crappy The Greek I’m not.

In picking Sun King, I went against one of my prime rules in picking horses when I don’t have a clue as to what’s going on: ALWAYS go with a Grateful Dead connection, no matter how tenuous. And here are some lyrics from Iko-Iko, a New Orleans standard, frequently performed by the Dead:

Hey now (hey now)
Hey now (hey now)
Iko iko all day
Jockomo feeno ah na nay
Jockomo feena nay

OK. The spelling is different, but Giacamo is pronounced “Jockomo.”

Crap. I should have learned this by now: Never listen to my brain.

  1. Indeed, over analyization does inhibit much of our instincts – however, Jockomo was also sung by Justine Bateman in the not so smash hit “Satisfaction”, which starred a then unknown actress named Julia Roberts who spent most of the movie having sex with her boyfriend – a good bit of this film was filmed on Kiawah, and my parents home was considered by the movie crew – however, mom told the director, ‘If you have to move a Steinway into the home, it stays here’, anyway, they chose another beach home for the movie – and they never asked for any sex doubles – so overall – the movie sucked. So where does that leave us, the Dead probably sung Jockomo more times than the movie Satisfaction has actually been viewed, so, in the end, you’re right – you blew your chance to rule, at least for the 2 most exciting minutes of sport.

PS- at the end, I was disappointed Afleet Alex didn’t hang on – what a story it could have been.

  2. Jesus, I had forgotten about that movie, probably because no one ever asked to use our house for it…
