E. Gordon Gee, who served as Ohio State’s president through most of the 1990s, will return to OSU as president in August — just in time for football season.
Gee was hugely popular when he was in Columbus for his first term, and apparently did well at subsequent stints at Brown and Vanderbilt.
Gee’s stay at Vandy was notable for one decision, controversial at the time but apparently successful — he disbanded the athletics department and handed over responsibility for the school’s sports programs to its student life department instead.
Uh, Gordon? We’re thrilled you’re coming back to Columbus. But that whole disbanding-the-athletics-department deal? Probably wouldn’t be such a good thing to try once you get back to OSU.
some of us were thinking (my sugar momma and me) – you cannot go back…but listen to his intro on wosu/am 820 and you get that special gordon vibe again and check out the front photo of saturday’s dispatch metro section. that little man can make you smile…

Yeah, it won’t be the same. But in terms of athletics, it doesn’t need to be. We no longer need a university president gloating in the pressbox about a tie being one of the team’s greatest victories.
These days, we do that on the field.
