Twitter is preparing for war. Are yinz ready?
For the past couple of weeks, Twitter users have been adding colors or flags to their avatars, claiming membership in various teams. The build-up, initially proposed by zefrank, will eventually lead to summer camp-like competitions and the selection of a winner of some kind.
The folks in Pittsburgh largely ignored the color war preparations, until Norm came up with a good local alternative: the Yinz Team. Membership is spreading, slowly but surely.
And here’s where I run into some difficulty. I’ve lived here since 1994, and I’m completely comfortable with identifying myself as a resident of the Pittsburgh area. But joining the Yinz Team? I’m not sure that’s a step I can take. Given my, uh, background, and how that might relate to a region that so closely identifies itself with its NFL franchise — would this even be possible?
That’s tough.
I almost pulled the trigger last night, after some discussion of the topic at the Podcamp Pittsburgh planning session in Bellevue. I even came up with an avatar:
So — would that be acceptable?

Awesome.
This is an avatar my father would be proud of.

I thought I’d be burned at the stake if I joined Team Yinzers, but your avatar is making me rethink things.

Locobone: The reaction wasn’t nearly as hostile as I expected. I’m not sure I would have tried it during football season, though.
