rs1.jpgIt’s possible that I might be just a little excited about a discovery I made last night. It’s also possible that the discovery means I’ll be sitting in front of the computer for a great deal of time this weekend, clicking little download buttons and grinning like an idiot.

For almost three years, I’ve been a user of eMusic, a subscription service that gives me a set number of MP3 downloads for $10 a month. I like the service because it works out to be a whole lot cheaper than iTunes, and its catalog of indy music, jazz, exclusive concert recordings and, yes, my beloved hippie music is impressive.

I was actually looking for some Tokyo Police Club stuff to listen to as I get ready for next week’s show, but last night I didn’t get past the eMusic home page.

Why?

THE ENTIRE ROLLING STONES DECCA/LONDON CATALOG IS NOW ON EMUSIC.

That’s everything they recorded up through Let It Bleed. The Stones made great music after forming their own label with the release of Sticky Fingers — I will maintain until the day I die that Exile on Main Street is the best rock album ever — but as they rolled into the 1970s, they also became much less consistent.

There were some clunkers before the Rolling Stones Records demarcation — Their Satanic Majesties Request was a horrible attempt at keeping up with the Beatles, for example — but all those mid-1960s records, when the Stones were playing American R&B better than most Americans, are classics, each and every one. Oh, and their own songs — “Satisfaction,” “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Sympathy for the Devil,” etc. — they turned out to be pretty good too.

Do I own some of these already? Of course — Let It Bleed and Beggar’s Banquet are both nearly as good as Exile, and I borrowed my parents copy of Get Yer Ya-Yas Out when I was about 10 and never gave it back. And could I have picked up each of these on iTunes. Sure — at $10 a pop.

So, yeah, I might be a little happy about this. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have to go buy some blank CDs.

  1. Fantastic tip! I’m in the market for a Nano and this seems like a good solution.

Oh and if you didn’t know, I really, really, really like the Rolling Stones.
