When I listed the lineup of free shows the Three Rivers Arts Festival was bringing to town this month, I kinda did a double-take after listening to a few songs by Black Moth Super Rainbow. I went to the trouble of adding them to the list after hearing some of their stuff; I also went to the trouble of making a hasty trip downtown after work today so I could hear their set.
Wow, is all I can say. My initial assessment — an interesting meld of early Pink Floyd and doses of electronica — was evident tonight. Our music guy and I were both pretty impressed, especially with the notion that this is a Pittsburgh band. It’s swirling synths, lots of reverb and in many cases a pretty healthy dance thing going on — even the vocals are so distorted they they end up as just another musical texture, rather than the centerpiece of a given song. Joe Grushecky it ain’t, that’s for sure.
My suggestion is to do what I did: Head to their website and download some of the free goodies. You’ll find something you like. They’re a Rolling Stone-certified “Band to Watch” for christsake — I know that doesn’t always mean what it used to, but trust me here, and give ’em a try.

Equally super is my latest work-related video appearance on this here internet. I’ve occasionally filled in for my paper’s daily webcast when the need arises; it arose today when the regulars were both sitting at home. What’s different was this: just before the producer started taping, she told me the webcasts are now being uploaded to YouTube.
Hoo. No pressure there.
Anyway, if you want yet another chance to laugh at Uncle Crappy, send me an email, and I’ll pass on the link. Be nice.
Cool spot on YouTube – yellow shirt looks good – if you can get on with an OSU or Browns shirt, I’ll give you $5.

I did another today, and while I’m not wearing OSU gear, the fact that it was taped at my desk may qualify. You’ll have to check it out and decide.
