I had the good fortune of a morning assignment downtown today, and as soon as I got in my car, I knew what I was having for lunch.
We had never found time to get to Franktuary before, and I knew I was missing out on the kind of stuff that’s right up my alley. Once I found a parking space, I practically ran down Oliver Street to the entrance.
One of the employees — I think his name was Derek — strolled around to my side of the counter to point out a couple of favorites. I took one of his recommendations — the Texan, with chili, cheese and jalepenos — and picked one of my own — the Chicago Imposter, with mustard, relish, onions, sport peppers, tomatoes, a pickle spear and a generous dusting of celery salt. The Chicago dog was excellent, and there’s a bright yellow splotch on my shirt as evidence of my enthusiasm. But the Texan was fabulous; as one of Pittsburgh foremost chili-dog connoisseurs, I can say with complete certainty that Franktuary’s chili sauce is just about the best I’ve ever had.
One additional thing: Derek pointed out the Locavore, a dog made from organic, grass-fed beef raised and produced in Volant. They’re a little bit more expensive, but I wanted to give it a try with both of my orders — and I’m glad I did. I asked Derek whether they compared with the Omaha Steaks franks, my previous favorite, and he said he thought they were better. I have to agree.
If you have a reason to be downtown at lunchtime, wander around back behind Trinity Cathedral and visit Franktuary. And make sure you bring a bib.
Looks great.
I just had my ultimate hot dog experience last month at Pink’s in LA. I had the Planet Hollywood. The secret ingredient is bacon, need I say more.

I need someone to smack me over the head on the weekend and remind me to go there. I neeeeed to try the veggie dog action, but keep forgetting. Oh, the disadvantages of not working downtown!
