Welcome to Nothing But Fun Day.

It’s about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, and I just got home from work. I generally don’t work Fridays, but I wanted an extra day to recover from the Groundhog party last weekend, so I switched my regular Sunday night gig for Friday night instead.

On Sunday, it seemed like an excellent idea. Friday afternoon, when I was driving to work? Eh. Not so much.

Because of my Sunday-through-Thursday schedule, Friday nights and Saturdays tend to be pretty valuable to The Wife and me. Since I hacked off one of those days this week, we’re stuck with trying to get it all packed into a single day. Hence: Nothing But Fun Day.

What does Nothing But Fun Day not mean?

  • We’re not doing the dishes.
  • We’re not doing any laundry.
  • We’re not going to pay any bills.
  • We’re going to go an entire day without worrying about the clutter that threatens to take over the apartment.
  • I’m not even considering going to Home Depot and picking up the stuff I need to fix that goddamn leaky faucet in the kitchen.

What will we do with Nothing But Fun Day instead?

  • We’re going to eat an enormous breakfast. Drink oily coffee. Read the newspaper we’ll steal from the neighbors.
  • We’re going to go over to the same neighbors’ home and play with their month-old beagle puppies. (They really don’t mind about the papers.)
  • We’re going to see a movie. Maybe two. Buttered popcorn will be involved.
  • We’re going to stop at 3 Sons to pick up cans of Oskar Blues’ Ten Fidy imperial stout. We might even drink one or two.
  • We’re going out for dinner. And maybe a drink after.

There are other things we might do, but the beauty of Nothing But Fun Day is not having too many plans. Don’t want to feel rushed. Pressure is not an acceptable part of Nothing But Fun Day.

How did I start Nothing But Fun Day? As soon as I got home from work, I helped myself to this:

Warm brownie with whipped cream. Yeah. And those papers on the desk?

They’re going to have to wait until Sunday.

  1. Whoo-hoo indeed!

Please Twitter your whereabouts Saturday evening. I plan to be out ‘n’ about in the Cranberry area, and if you and the elegant Wife of Crappy are nearby, maybe we can effect a tweetup of sorts.

  2. all right – we’ll do our part in the northeast – skiing today (left with report of rain today, but we said, let’s go anyway) – now its a snow advisory with 6 inches expected – fun with the fam on the slopes

  3. Cindy: Good idea. We’ll get in touch.

Kewyson: Nothing But Fun Day is even better when the weather cooperates. But if you get too much snow there is a risk of Nothing But Fun Day turning into Oh God This Is Never Going To End Weekend. Let’s be careful out there.

  5. E: I’d definitely recommend working an occasional Grownup Nothing But Fun Day in the schedule.

Ours worked out well. We had a lazy morning — corned beef hash was the big breakfast — and that kind of kept us away from the movies. But we checked out a couple of just-listed houses in Brighton Heights — both pretty promising — took in a new installation at the Mattress Factory, bought fresh bagels in Squirrel Hill, bought more books we have no room for, ate at Mad Mex and drank a couple cans of Ten Fidy once we got home. I also baked the last batch of brownies we had ready, and — confession — had to wash a couple of dishes as a result. Still — that was a pretty good Nothing But Fun Day.

  6. And I forgot what could have been the best part. While reading the paper Saturday morning, I began to bitch about the lack of quality children’s television programming available. That’s when The Wife reminded me of the four-DVD Warner Brothers cartoon set I received for Christmas. So we watched Daffy Duck episodes while eating our breakfast.

  7. NBFD is a righteously fantastic idea. We have Nothing but Fun Night a lot, but I really, really like the idea of All Day Fun. Which for us would include:
    no laundry
    no internet /Blackberry sessions
    no kitchen tidying
    no yard work / shoveling
    no coding
